‘Whole Self’ Mantra Leaves a Hole in the Heart — Offer Your ‘Holy Self’ at Work

Georges GobetBenedictine monks work in the sandal-making room at the Sainte-Marie de la Garde monastery in Saint-Pierre-de-Clairac near Agen in southwestern France on Sept. 10, 2019. The 16 monks of the monastery are the only ones in France to manufacture this type of sandal, almost 1,200 pairs of which are sold each year by mail order to customers as far away as Japan. The monastery’s shoe business has been so successful that the Benedictines refuse orders to preserve their monastic prayer life.
