Mignarda Ensemble, Cleveland’s resident early music specialists, will sing four settings of the Marian antiphon Regina cæli lætare set by Spanish composers Franciso Guerrero (c.1528 – 1599), Cristóbal de Morales (c. 1500 – 1553), and Tomás Luis de Victoria (c.1548 – 1611).  Also featured on the program will be exquisite and exuberant seasonal motets associated with the Nuptial Mass.

In addition to a cappella polyphony, the sublime sound of one or more lutes will be featured prominently in the concert program.  Inclusion of instruments was quite common in 16th-century Spanish liturgical music, and it has been well-established that lutes shared the stage with their flat-backed cousin, the viheula, in Renaissance Spain.

Duo Mignarda, Donna Stewart and Ron Andrico, will be joined by local favorite, baritone José Gotera and the duo of Francy Acosta and José Luis Posada.  Mignarda’s three guest artists are all alumi of the Case Western Reserve program in Early Music.

Francy and José Luis co-direct EnsAmble Ad-Hoc and are originally from Colombia, where they are well-known exponents of early music as well as traditional music.  Now based in the Chicago area, Francy and José Luis are making a rare Cleveland appearance in a concert not to be missed.

Duo Mignarda, who met singing the Tridentine Latin Mass in over 15 years ago, have quietly made significant inroads in the field of early music worldwide through their 12 CDs, the latest released in March 2019.  Donna Stewart’s video of the Gregorian chant, Tantum ergo sacramentum, has accrued more than 1.6 million views to date, with 108,000 views from over 50 countries during the 2019 Lenten season alone.

Among the rare gems featured on the concert program will be a performance of Mignarda’s tremendously successful arrangement of Victoria’s Duo Seraphim for two lutes and two voices—Mignarda’s recording of this piece has done much for the cause of advancing the sweet sound of the lute and has achieved a satisfying degree of international popularity with a steady 15,000 – 20,000 streams and downloads per month over the past year alone.
