Bishop Nelson Perez is a native of Miami, Florida. He became the 11th Bishop of the diocese of Cleveland on September 5, 2017. He was ordained a priest in 1989 for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and was named auxiliary bishop for Rockville Centre in 2012. Before being ordained he was a Catholic elementary school teacher. He has served as pastor of two parishes and was the founding director of the Catholic Institute of Evangelization in Philadelphia, a center for adult faith formation and ministry training. Bishop Perez has taught religion and psychology courses at La Salle University, served on the board of directors for Catholic Health Services, and was vice chair of Catholic Charities. As a member of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, he currently chairs the Bishops’ Subcommittee for Hispanic Affairs. Upon news of his appointment, Bishop Perez said, “I am so very happy to be here with you, to learn from you, grow with you, and serve you with pastoral devotion.”
